Cruel Gift From Mother-In-Law. Should I do the same?

I would like to congratulate you on your weight loss. As someone who has been there, it is hard work to lose weight and to keep it off. Your Mother in law is reckless and irresponsible to send you a tacky gift 6 months late. I know it is almost irresistable to want to return the gift to her on her birthday or to respond in kind but I think it would demonstrate a great deal of self control to simply not respond to this. I don't know why she carries such a vendetta against you but it should have been dealt with along time ago by your husband. It would seem as though he could have had a chat with his Mother and asked for her to show some respect to the marriage and to treat you as a daughter. Be that as it may, I would send her a birthday card if you want to, and thank her for her thoughtful and kind gift. I would leave it at that. Or, if your husband is a good and loving man, thank her sincerely for raising him to be the good husband that he is. (If he in fact, is.) I would have no dealings with this woman. She sounds like she has mental problems or is simply mean spirited.
