Negotiating with auto insurance co?

I was rear-ended in my 10 year old car while stopped at a traffic light. The insurance co says my car is totalled and is offering me a sum which will not allow me to purchase a comparable vehicle (my car had v low mileage for its age and we had just put $1400 of repairs into it). The insurance co won't take into account the cost of the repairs b/c they say "maintenance is a part of owning a vehicle." But my point is, we put all the $$ into the car to keep in running and dependable for a long time - now all they're willing to give me is enough to buy a 10 year old car that IS a 10 year old car (i.e.: not well repaired - at least not for what they're offering me). Do I have any room for negotiation? And if so, what's the process? I've never been in an accident before so this is all new to me. I am NOT trying to scam the system, I just want to be able to get another car that's as good as the one that was hit. The accident was not my fault. Thanks in advance.
