Should we visit NYC on Christmas or Christmas Eve?

We live about 1 hr outside of the city but are not native New Yorkers. Both sets of parents are spending Christmas with us and would like to see the windows and the tree, which day would be best to do that? We were thinking about going in late morning or early afternoon and maybe staying thru dinner. Catching a show could also be a possibility... Are there matinees on Christmas Eve?
